VCI 3 is a High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) communicationsinterface that provides high-speed, point-to-point communications forcomputers supporting a VMEbus or SBus-to-VME adapters. HDLCcommunications are ideally used for realtime applications such as processcontrol, utilities monitoring, and manufacturing.Simpact's HDLC protocol executes on the Simpact IntelligentCommunications Processor (ICP 6/9), which is a 68020-based frontendprocessor (FEP) with up to 16 serial communications lines. Since thecommunications processing is done onboard the Simpact FEP, the mainsystem processor is left with maximum resource availability to run othercritical computing processes. When using Simpact's HDLC protocol, hostapplication programs can configure, enable, and disable HDLC lines,transmit and receive data, and request link statistics.
